Remember A Charity Week 2013 – 9 to 15 September

Blocks Solicitors are a Campaign Supporter of Remember A Charity. Remember A Charity was formed in 2000 and now has over 140 of the UK’s favourite charities, who work together to encourage more people to consider leaving a charitable gift in their Will, once they’ve looked after their family and friends.
• Legacies are vital to UK charities – bringing in £2 billion per year, the equivalent of 19 Comic Reliefs. Without gifts received in Wills, many charities simply wouldn’t exist, others would have to make dramatic cuts and hard decisions about the services that so many of us rely on.

• Whilst 75% of people donate to charity during their lifetimes, only 6% include a charity in their Will. However, more and more people are considering it.

• Every week around 40,000 people make or amend a Will, raising £40m for UK charities. If just 6% more people included a cause they cared about in their Will this week, this would mean another £40 million for good causes across the UK each week or £2 billion a year.

UK charities are asking everyone who makes a Will in the week beginning 9th September 2013 (and every week) to take a moment to think about including a gift to a cause they care about, after they have looked after their family and friends.

As well as helping a cause you care about, gifts to charity can provide a benefit for inheritance tax (IHT). Simply put, a lower rate of IHT of 36% is available for people who leave 10% of their net estate to charity.

It’s important to update your Will regularly to take account of your changing circumstances and changes to the law. Why not take the opportunity to update or make a Will today, and consider leaving a gift to charity in your new Will.
